McNulty Announces GPO/WEP Hearing

Congressman Michael R. McNulty (D-NY), Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Social Security of the Committee on Ways and Means, has announced that the Subcommittee will hold a hearing to examine the Government Pension Offset and Windfall Elimination Provision.

While these provisions were intended to help equalize the treatment of workers across employment sectors, many of the approximately one million individuals whose benefits are affected by these provisions believe the GPO and WEP are unfair.

The hearing will take place on Wednesday, January 16, 2008, in the main committee hearing room, 1100 Longworth House Office Building, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

The Subcommittee announcement of the hearing is here.

dear congressman mcnulty, i am a medically retired federal employee and also a 100% disabled veteran. due to service connected illness i am no longer able to work, and the fact that i, along with thousands of others in my position, am being denied my full Social Security benefits due to WEP is a disgrace to the people of this country who worked so hard, gave so much, and am receiving so little from Social Security at a time when the benefits i am due would help so much. please do your best to have these clauses in the Social Security law repealed. the federal worker does not make more money than private citizens. i earned my quarters, and i deserve my benefits and i am happy to see you standing up for us and working to see the government buck up and realize and admit that they are cheating us out of benefits we were forced to pay into. i trusted the government to do the right thing, and i would like to be able to trust the government to admit these clauses are unfair and we deserve to receive what we have earned. sincerely, barbara quester, gasport, ny.
